11/24/09 SHOW THOUGHTS (by Brett)

Blogging. It has always seemed so self indulgent to me. It's a way to have a conversation and not have to worry at all about listening to another person's response. In that way, it is the opposite of improv. But, the good news is, when it comes to reviewing an improv show, I think I know everything and don't give a shit about what anyone else thinks anyway! So, let my first blog ever begin...

We had our normal Tuesday night show at iO last night (sans our coach David Montgomery). I think it started really well. To give you a little predecessory (is this word real?) information, the form we do begins with us using our physicality and voices to build 3 objects or soundscapes. This week we built a pair of scissors that was cutting documents, a credit card swipe machine and a basketball goal. We use these 3 objects to inform our scenes.

The show started with a group of high school students who were building decorations for the homecoming parade. From there we kind of just followed the characters to anywhere fun that came up. I think we eventually bailed on the three objects that we built. For instance, I played a cheerleader who was dating a lacrosse player. Now, looking back, it would have been better if I had been dating a basketball player because of the goal we built in the opening. I think we missed little things like that.

The good thing about Michael Pizza is that we always have fun together. At one point, Kass made Josh laugh simply by using a funny, deep voice. At another point, Josh and Kass picked me up by my feet and raised me into the air while singing "Everybody Dance Now". That was fun.

Speaking of "Everybody Dance Now," Josh had vowed not to EVER sing this song again in a show. It is a "go-to" that we have used more than once. We get into a scene that requires a dance sequence and we immediately start singing "Everybody Dance Now". Well, tonight I started this song. But the cool thing was that it morphed and the words changed. In fact, the final scene of the show was an alternate version of this song where Josh's character was murdering Kass' character while singing different lyrics to this song.

Anyway, it was a fun show. Thanks to everyone who showed up to support us! As always, we're at iO every Tuesday, so come see us again.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Some fun things happened in our show (every Tuesday at 8 at iO in the DCT) this week. Some highlights being the human pyramid and the whole run that came with that game, the superhero debate, and the other little games we played. I wanna thank everyone that came out to see us and hope they have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Memory

I remember watching my grandpa pour coffee for whoever wanted it at the table. This is when I finally! got to sit at the adult table (it was a big move to sit there). Needless to say I saw some pretty crazy things and heard conversations not yet understood by my pea sized child brain, but one thing I saw that amazed me was when my grandpa would pour coffee for other people. I know what you're thinking. "Pouring coffee sounds so boring. What is this joker talking about." No friends, it's not. He wouldn't pour like a norm or a square. He would start pouring right about at a level height with the mug/glass/cup and then raise the coffee pot ever higher into the air. Up, up, up he would go. Higher! Higher above the table pouring so little coffee into the coffee recepticle to draw out the whole experience. My god he was a tall man which made the height he would take the pot so rediculous. When it was all over I was changed. I never let on that I got so much out of it, and no one else at the table really cared (why would they, they were adults and life had already stripped them of their wonder as has it to me by now. As a little kid, perhaps of nine or so, whenever promotions happened at the Logan family Thanksgiving, I was flabergasted.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Josh
